Make a DAV car donation and turn vehicle into a resource that helps our nation’s veterans

By Glenn E. Smith, Army & National Guard

Why did I make a DAV car donation?

In September of 1998, I proudly signed up with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard (the 111th Security Forces Squadron at Willow Grove). Three years later, our nation experienced the September 11 attacks. Shortly thereafter, my unit was activated and deployed to Lajes Field in the Azores, Portugal. We were there for 111 days, backing up and augmenting active duty security forces.

Being away from my wife during deployments was hard on both of us, but likely tougher on her. I wrote many letters to her and called home as often as possible, but nothing could replace being together. My comrades helped get me through it, and I helped them. My wife was home alone.

As tough as military service was on our relationship; any veteran will tell you how hard it is on a body. I’ve been retired from the service for 10 years, and the physical effects still linger. Some even grow slowly but steadily worse. My wife convinced me to finally put in for disability compensation. The paperwork was overwhelming. Fortunately, a friend who is active with DAV (Disabled American Veterans) helped guide me through the process.

I could not be happier with what the DAV has done for me. They are my advocate — cutting through red tape and making life much more enjoyable for me and my wife.

When it came time to replace her 18-year-old car, we decided to make a DAV car donation rather than sell it or trade it in. We can’t always donate a lot, but we do what we can, all in the name of helping my fellow veterans, which is the whole reason for DAV’s existence.

Please consider helping those who served and their families by choosing to make a disabled veterans car donation. It’s a great way to get rid of an old or extra vehicle. It’s easy to donate a car to DAV — much easier than applying for disability compensation (it only takes a few minutes) and DAV will pick up your car, free of charge, on your schedule.

Make a DAV car donation and turn your vehicle into a resource that helps ensure our nation’s veterans can live life with the respect and dignity they deserve. You may even qualify for a tax deduction. Make an auto donation for veterans or get more information by visiting Car4DAV.com or calling 844–440–4267.
